Large Men
- photos and text by Bob Pankhurst 23-09-09
While you were all sleeping this morning Bob was out at 5.30 am braving the dangers of the Australian bush
to get you these exclusive, but not very clear, pictures of the giant men I spoke of yesterday.
The danger of attacks by giant black panthers and capture by aliens was ever present.
I have included seven pictures. It is hard to photograph these 9 m anthromorphs with
an ordinary camera and only water to highlight them because I can only carry in
four milk bottles of water by myself and the drawings are so large.
There are two large men positioned with heads to east and feet to west they are side by side
and are holding hands, both have belts around their waist; The man on the left has
a head dress with balls on it, two eyes and a mouth. His left arm has an armlet on it
and his right arm ends just above the fire circle I sent yesterday.
This man has a very large circumcised penis and two short legs with feet.
The man on the left, which may be a woman, has a head dress which is a large one
ending in a circle he also has two eyes. He /she is holding hands with the right arm
with the other man and the left arm has a hand with five fingers on it.
A belt is around the waist and below this belt is an unusual bump.
There may be one leg and foot but this is hard to discern.
A “modern” kangaroo is drawn over the lower part of this carving.
I will explain the photos which I might have to send on two separate
emails because of email size restraints.
1849 is the site facing east and standing just below the belt of the right hand man, the fire circle sent yesterday can be seen top left.
1850 is photographed to show the two men holding hands, the unusual head dress can be seen on both men and also the fire circle
1860 shows the head dress on the right hand man. His arms can be discerned in this picture.
1862 Shows part of the body and the fire circle the right arm can be seen ending just above the circle.
1866 is a full length view of the right hand man, the legs can be just made out in this view but the large penis is hard to see.
1867 Is the head dress on the right hand man and also his eyes mouth and arms.
1868 is the head dress on the left hand man which ends in a circle next to a depression in the rocks. The fingers can be seen on the left hand.
Has any one ever seen anything to resemble these carvings in their travels? I certainly haven’t and I have a fair library of recorded carvings from all around Australia.
Incidentally I was saying yesterday that thousands of people had visited this site and no one had reported these large men.
They are almost impossible to find unless you are there at the right times of day, well on my visit this morning
I found a 2 m eel and a hafted axe carving which I had never seen before. I have been to this site probably 1000 times
in the last fifty years and once spent several days and nights at the site working with arc lights but this morning there they were.
Now I have to amend my book on the site. It is a never ending story.
For John B. information the rocks slope from East to West and the east part of the rocks would probably be 12 to 18 inches higher than the western border.
Send these pictures on to anyone who might be able to interpret what these figures mean
Another interfering amateur.
Regards to all
Bob.
Addendum:
John
I was not the discoverer of the site; McCarthy reported it in about 1944
which was before the quarrying was carried out. The site was near a
property owned and farmed by Alistair Leask who had a very large citrus
orchard there. I was in the scouts with his sons. We used to ride there
on our pushbikes and later Old Sydney Town was built on Leasks'
property. No one had ever reported the large men and until about 15
years ago I had them shown in my books as large whales until on one late
afternoon visit I observed the ornate head dress and then could see the
rest of the figure. Later I showed them to NPWS. We did a proper
archaeological survey on this site about three years ago. We have
visited there several times since with powerful lights at night to see
if we could find more carvings which we have done. The two carvings I
found this morning did not show up in these searches. They may be
unreported. The head dresses on the large man consist of carved stems
with a carved circle at the end of them. The man with the five circles
has eyes and a mouth. A mouth is unusual as I only know of two other men
in the district with a mouth shown.(Bulgandry and Patonga) As you
observe the lines of the body of the left hand man go through the
blackened circle from yesterday's pictures and the right hand of the
figure is at the top of this circle. The circle on the head dress of the
right hand figure ends at the edge of a circular depression and also the
hand with fingers is on the edge of this depression. The lines of these
two drawings are almost 3 inches wide and very shallow, there are only a
few carvings in the district with wide lines such as these and these are
also very old and hard to find. I might be the only person to know where
they are. I would say that most of the "modern" carvings at this site
are in the 200-500 year time frame, while these large ones may be
2000-5000 years old or even older. There is a large "modern kangaroo
drawn over the bottom half of the right hand man. I use my dating ideas
from rock engravings I have seen in Jordan which are on similar
sandstone and are reliably dated by the inscriptions on them. I may also
be compared to the village idiot by using this idea but it humours me. I
think, and this is another supposition, that these large men were drawn
by a different group or tribe who inhabited this area before
Darkingung/Gurringai people. I say this because of the carvings and
maybe a fire defacing the drawings which could happen if the later group
of people did not know the legend shown or did not see the carvings. The
Aboriginals of the Northern Territory do not recognise Gwion Gwion or
Mimi paintings as being done by their people hence they do not respect
them. If any one would like to see these sites or any others I will
gladly take you there. Early morning or late afternoons is the best time
for this site which is known as Mooney Mooney Aboriginal Area and is
signposted. The only trouble is the gate is locked and you have to walk
in. I visit all sites once or twice a year to check them and invariably
I find something new.
